Douglas Fir, or Oregon, is an evergreen conifer found in areas of Canada, known for its excellent strength and workability and is the hardest of the softwoods. Its grain texture is straight with occasional knots, the texture is fine, which creates a smooth and even surface.
This particular piece was salvaged from a house renovation in New Lambton, Newcastle NSW. It was cut from a 3000mm construction beam. The timber was extremely rough, with several large construction nails removed. Hours on the belt sander to remove the rough finish and level the piece, finally sanding through several different grits to reveal the beautiful grain. Several knots were filled with dark epoxy to stabilse the timber. Three coats of Australian made Cabots hard waring polyurethane UV resistant finish were used being applied with a 12 hour drying time between coats with a light sand in between each coat to achieve the final stunning finish.
20x20x3.0mm RHS/SHS tube and 40mm steel angle were fabricated to make the legs, all steel was reclaimed from a Hunter Valley demolition company, making this piece made from 100% reclaimed materials.
The legs have been fitted with flexable rubber feet to ensure stablity and to protect floor areas. Two coats of Metal Pro Grey Primer, with corrosion barrier by Dy-Mark, (Austrailan owned and manufactured) was applied to the frame, two to three top coats of Montana Black water based enamel (Germany) and two clear coats of Australian Export clear.
